About the Position

Africa Climate Solutions (ACS) is seeking a highly motivated Website Development and Digital Systems Intern to support the continuous development, management, optimization, and enhancement of the organization’s digital platforms. This internship is ideal for final-year MSc students or PhD candidates with strong backgrounds in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Web Development, or related disciplines who are interested in applying their technical expertise to climate science and sustainable development.

The intern will play a key role in ensuring that the ACS website remains a modern, secure, interactive, and user-centered knowledge platform. Working closely with the research, communication, and innovation teams, the intern will be responsible for improving website functionality, refining the website architecture and user experience, updating scientific and institutional content, integrating digital tools, and supporting the development of web-based climate information systems.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the digital transformation of a growing climate organization while gaining practical experience in web technologies, information architecture, user experience (UX), digital knowledge management, and science communication.

Specific Terms of Reference include

The successful intern will support the following activities:

Website Management and Maintenance

• Maintain and regularly update the ACS website. 
• Upload and organize publications, reports, datasets, news articles, project pages, and institutional information. 
• Ensure website content remains accurate, current, and visually appealing. 
• Monitor website functionality and resolve technical issues. 

Website Architecture and User Experience

• Review and continuously improve website structure and navigation. 
• Enhance user experience (UX) and accessibility. 
• Optimize website performance across desktop and mobile devices. 
• Develop interactive webpage layouts for research outputs and innovation platforms. 

Digital Innovation

• Support integration of interactive climate dashboards, GIS maps, data visualization tools, and web applications. 
• Assist in developing the ACS Data & Tools Portal. 
• Support API integration for climate databases and digital services. 
• Explore AI-enabled tools to improve website functionality. 

Website Security and Performance

• Monitor website security and perform regular backups. 
• Optimize website loading speed and performance. 
• Support search engine optimization (SEO). 
• Implement best practices for cybersecurity and data protection. 

Analytics and Reporting

• Monitor website analytics using Google Analytics and related tools. 
• Prepare monthly reports on website performance and visitor engagement. 
• Recommend improvements based on user behavior. 

Collaboration

• Work closely with researchers, communication staff, and management to translate scientific outputs into engaging web content. 
• Support development of online knowledge repositories and digital libraries. 

Requirements

Applicants should meet the following qualifications:

• Final-year MSc student or current PhD candidate in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Web Development, Data Science, Information Systems, or related disciplines. 
• Excellent academic performance
• Strong knowledge in website development and management. 
• Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, or similar web technologies. 
• Experience with WordPress (preferred), Drupal, Joomla, or other CMS platforms. 
• Experience with GitHub and version control systems is desirable. 
• Knowledge of database management (MySQL/PostgreSQL). 
• Basic understanding of web security. 
• Experience integrating APIs and interactive web applications is an advantage. 
• Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills. 
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment. 

Terms of Employment
