Climate Justice & Equity
Africa contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions but bears a disproportionate share of climate impacts. Within countries, vulnerable populations—such as smallholder farmers, pastoralists, women, and marginalized communities—are particularly exposed to climate risks and have limited adaptive capacity. This creates a strong imperative to address climate change through a justice and equity lens.
Integrating climate justice into climate action ensures that interventions are inclusive, equitable, and aligned with the needs of the most affected populations. It also supports global commitments under the UNFCCC, including principles of common but differentiated responsibilities and Loss and Damage. Addressing equity considerations enhances the social legitimacy and effectiveness of climate policies and investments.
ACS integrates equity considerations into climate risk assessments, policy analysis, and program design, ensuring that interventions prioritize vulnerable communities and marginalized groups.
By combining scientific analysis with socio-economic data, ACS identifies differential impacts and supports inclusive policy design. Engagement with local communities and integration of Indigenous and local knowledge systems ensures context-sensitive solutions.
