Africa Climate Solutions (ACS) is evidence and innovation centered scientific non-profit Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) dedicated to advancing climate-resilient, environmentally sustainable, and equitable development across Africa. ACS operates to generate actionable scientific evidence that supports resilient development pathways, climate justice, and sustainable environmental management. The organization focuses on scientific research, climate analytics, data systems, innovation, climate services, and evidence-based policy support across critical sectors including agriculture, water, energy, health, infrastructure, ecosystems, governance, and climate finance.
ACS is committed to addressing Africa’s major climate and environmental challenges, including increasing climate extremes, limited observational data systems, growing climate vulnerabilities, and the need for integrated climate intelligence to support adaptation, mitigation, and Loss and Damage assessment. Through its research programs, digital innovations, and partnerships, ACS seeks to strengthen Africa’s capacity to generate, manage, and utilize climate information for policy and investment decision-making.
About the Position
The Communication and Media Engagement Officer will lead ACS’s strategic communication, science dissemination, media engagement, and public outreach initiatives. The position plays a critical role in translating complex scientific findings into accessible, compelling, and policy-relevant communication products for diverse audiences including policymakers, development partners, media professionals, researchers, and the general public.
The Officer will support ACS’s visibility, institutional branding, stakeholder engagement, and public communication efforts, ensuring that the organization’s scientific outputs effectively influence climate policy, development planning, and public discourse. The role is particularly important in addressing the communication gap between climate science and society, where technical findings often remain inaccessible to decision-makers and vulnerable communities.
The position requires strong expertise in science communication, media relations, digital communication platforms, and strategic messaging, with a particular focus on climate change, environmental sustainability, and development issues in Africa.
Specific Terms of Reference include:
- Develop and implement ACS’s communication and media engagement strategy.
- Translate scientific and technical outputs into accessible communication products.
- Develop press releases, newsletters, website content, social media materials, and institutional publications.
- Manage ACS’s digital communication platforms and online visibility.
- Coordinate media engagement and establish relationships with journalists and media institutions.
- Support communication of climate risks, attribution findings, and policy recommendations.
- Produce visual communication products including infographics, videos, and multimedia materials.
- Support organization of conferences, workshops, and public engagement events.
- Ensure consistent institutional branding and communication quality.
- Monitor media coverage and assess communication effectiveness.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Media Studies, Climate Communication, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience.
- Strong experience in science communication and digital media management.
- Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Understanding of climate change, sustainable development, and environmental issues.
- Experience with graphic design, multimedia tools, and social media platforms is desirable.
- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Excellent English communication skills.
Terms of Employment
